Handy Limited Sustainability Policy

Handy Limited is committed to promoting sustainability. Concern for our staff, supply chain and the wider environmental agenda are an integral consideration throughout our organisational activities.

We strive to reduce the environmental impact from all our activities and demand the same from our suppliers whilst encouraging our customers to do likewise.

  • As a leading component supplier to the bedding and upholstery industries, we aim where possible to source local products to reduce their carbon footprint.
  • When sourcing components from international suppliers we will look for ways to reduce environmental impact, including bulk orders of components to avoid multiple shipments.
  • We only work with suppliers that comply with, and exceed where practicable, all applicable legislation, regulations, and codes of practice in manufacturing.
  • Through our bespoke packaging service, we work with clients to proactively identify solutions to reduce packaging without compromising product safety.
  • We are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) which ensures the timber and fibres we use comes from responsible sources (Certificate Number BV-COC-019974).
  • All waste generated across our Stoke distribution and manufacturing site is recycled – our objective is to divert waste from landfills and reduce harmful toxins and gases released into the atmosphere.
  • We aim to minimise our use of paper and other office consumables, for example by double-siding all paper used and storing most files on our computers.
  • We arrange for the reuse or recycling of all office waste, including paper, computer supplies and redundant equipment.
  • 85% of our packaging is made from recycled materials and where possible we have reduced the use of all plastics.
  • Through effective housekeeping we have reduced our energy usage across our estate.
  • At all times during any new product development we strive to utilise recycled
  • materials.
  • In an effort to cut transport emissions over  80% of our vehicle fleet is fully electric.
  • We are active members of the NBF ‘Pledge for the Planet’ initiative
  • We ensure that all staff are fully aware of our Sustainability Policy and that they are committed to implementing and improving it.
  • Where possible we encourage staff to walk, cycle and/or use public transport to attend meetings, site visits etc.
  • We are Corporate members of The Furniture Makers Company charity for the furnishing industry.
  • We seek opportunities to speak about industry sustainability and further educate clients and suppliers.
  • As a member of the National Bed Federation’s  (NBF) Council, our Managing Director, Nick Harland-Smith aims to raise industry awareness around the sustainability of manufacturing within the sector alongside tackling the issue of regulations and rogue suppliers.
  • As a trade member of Anti Copying In Design (ACID), we are committed to supporting the industry against design fraud.
  • As a member of The British Furniture Manufacturers Association (BFM) it is our intention to continue to heighten sustainability awareness.
  • We look forward to becoming increasingly involved in the wide network of committees and groups that work to improve the green credentials of our industry.
