Handy's steps towards sustainability
Posted on: February 20th 2023
Reducing our impact upon the planet throughout our commercial operations is becoming an ever increasing factor in the various decisions made on a day to day basis within our company. Areas such as material and product sourcing, packaging, transportation, fleet management and our own energy consumption are constantly being reviewed, measured, and monitored to ensure that we are increasing Handy’s “green” credentials.
Our purchasing and new product development departments are requesting the utilisation of recycled raw materials to be used wherever possible within our range of components. We are mindful of the ease that these components can ultimately be broken down and recycled again when they reach the end of their useful life. We are also developing components that specifically aid the deconstruction and recycling of our customers finished mattress, upholstered furniture, office chair etc at their end-of-life.
All of our cardboard packaging is made from recycled products and of course it is recyclable, whilst any plastic packaging that we use contains at least 30% of recycled material. As a result, in 2022 we halved our plastic packaging usage measured by weight and this will halve again in the coming year. Our own waste to landfill has fallen by 45% in the past 12 months. We only use self-adhesive paper tape in our packaging department.
Wherever possible we source raw materials and product from suppliers as close to home as possible along with minimizing the frequency of shipments thus reducing the carbon footprint. Also, our own vehicle fleet is now 75% fully electric and we have installed low energy lighting throughout our offices, production facility and distribution centre.
Handy is proud to be certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) ensuring that the timber and paper-based products that we sell are sourced from managed and sustainable forests. Last year we signed up to the National Bed Federations “Pledge for our Planet”, an industry wide scheme to reduce our impact on global warming and to demonstrate measurable steps taken to reduce our Company’s impact upon the environment.
We acknowledge that there is always room for further improvement and our staff are conscious of focusing their minds on improving sustainability and reducing waste within the day-to-day operations at Handy Ltd.
